Squadron

We are part of a national youth organisation called the Air Training Corps, sponsored by the Royal Air Force to give you hands-on experience of activities and courses that will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in whatever you want to do. 

The Squadron is located in the Two Locks area of Cwmbran, near to Cwmbran Stadium and about a mile South of the Town Centre. We are based in the grounds of Cwmbran Territorial Army Centre and have strong links with the sub unit of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, 100 Field Squadron, who are based there.

Squadron History

Formed in 1953 as a Detached flight of 2216 (Pontypool) Squadron, they were initially based at Griffithstown in the old Territorial Army hall at Kemys Hill.

In 1955, the flight was transferred to Cwmbran and took up residence in a building on Avondale Road, which had previously has been a Hostel. The flight was upgrade to a Squadron and allocated the prefix 2308.

Two further changes of location took place in the following years, firstly to a building next to the Old Bridge public house at Pontnewydd, Cwmbran. The next switch brought the Squadron Headquarters adjacent to the 1209 Branch of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Social Club, Pontnewydd (See picture to the right).

The Squadron officially moved to the new purpose built headquarters within the Ty John Williams VC Territorial Army Centre, Cwmbran on Saturday 9th September 2000.
